Why We Built This
A Safer Alternative to Traditional Gambling
Why bet against friends instead of bookmakers?
Many people enjoy making predictions, but traditional gambling can cause real harm. Real-money betting can contribute to financial stress, relationship problems, anxiety, and addiction. What often starts as harmless entertainment can become expensive over time.
The odds are usually against you
When you bet with a bookmaker, you are betting against a company whose goal is to make a profit. Bookmakers use analysts, statistics, and built-in profit margins to ensure the odds generally favour the house. While some people win individual bets, the average bettor is more likely to lose money over time than make a profit.
What makes Want to Bet different?
Want to Bet is designed to capture the fun, competition, and bragging rights of making predictions without the risks associated with traditional gambling. Instead of betting against a bookmaker, users make friendly bets against each other using fake money.
โ
No real money involved
โ
No bookmaker taking a cut
โ
No house edge
โ
No gambling operator profiting from losses
โ
Just friendly competition and putting your opinions to the test
Bet responsibly
Want to Bet is intended as a social and entertainment platform. If gambling is affecting your finances, relationships, work, or wellbeing, consider seeking support and taking a break from real-money betting.
How Want to Bet works
What is it?
Want to Bet is a place to back your opinions with fake money. You say something will happen, choose the odds you're willing to offer, and other people decide whether to bet against you. No real money is involved, and there's no login.
The pages
- Offers: search, sort and bet on open offers, and make your own offer at the bottom.
- My bets: your open offers, bets you've placed, your results, stats and badges.
- Ready to settle: bets where betting has closed and the result needs to be declared. The number in brackets shows how many are waiting.
- Odds over time: pick a bet to see every offer made on it, plus its comments. For a question, each answer gets its own coloured bar and line, so you can compare their odds side by side.
- Leaderboard: rankings, monthly seasons, the Hall of Fame, head to head, and settled bets.
- Activity: the latest happenings, Bet of the week, Biggest upset and more.
The Filter by topic box under the menu narrows every page except this one to a single topic, and then to a subtopic.
1. Pick a group
Everything lives inside a group, and each group has its own bets, topics and leaderboard.
- Everyone (public) is the default group. Anyone can see it.
- Create a group under Create or join a group to get a private space with an invite link to share. The device that creates a group becomes its admin, with tools to delete a bet, rename a topic and release a claimed name.
- Join a group by opening an invite link, or pasting a link or code into the Join box.
The invite link is the only protection, so only share it with people you want in the group.
2. Your name and PIN
Type your name at the top of the page. This is the name shown on your offers and bets, and your browser remembers it.
Names can be claimed with a PIN so nobody else can use them. If a name is claimed, you'll need its PIN once on each device. Remember your PIN, because it can't be recovered, only released by a group admin.
3. Make an offer
The form is at the bottom of the Offers page. Choose what kind of bet it is:
- A statement, for example "It will rain in Sydney on Saturday". You back it, and others bet against you.
- A question, for example "Who will win the Melbourne Cup?". You give your own answer, other people add theirs, and everyone else bets against the answers they think are wrong.
Then fill in:
- Odds: how much you'll pay out for every 1 someone bets against you.
- Most you'll pay out: your total limit across everyone who bets.
- Topic and subtopic: pick from the list, or choose Other (type your own).
- Forfeit (optional): a fun extra for the loser, like shouting coffee.
- Betting closes (optional): after this time nobody can bet.
- Sam bets 10 against you. If you lose, you pay Sam 20. If you win, Sam pays you 10.
- Up to 50 in total can be bet against you, because 50 × 2 = 100.
4. Bet against an offer
Find an offer or answer you disagree with, type how much you want to bet (any amount up to what's left), and click Bet. You can't bet against your own offer, and you can't bet once betting has closed.
Use Comments on any bet for a bit of trash talk, and Share to send a link straight to that bet.
5. Offer your own odds or add an answer
On a statement, click Offer your own odds to back the same statement at different odds. On a question, click Add your answer to back a different answer. Each offer has its own limit.
6. Say who won
Once betting has closed (or straight away if there's no closing time), the bet appears on Ready to settle. Anyone in the group can settle it, and the result records who settled it.
- Statements: click the name of the winner. Each bet is settled separately.
- Questions: click the correct answer, or None of these. All the bets on the question are settled together.
Undo: if a result is wrong, either person in the bet (from the device they used) or the group admin can click Undo result within 48 hours, and the bet goes back to Ready to settle.
Stats, badges, seasons and updates
- Stats: net winnings, record, win rate, streak, last-5 form, and how often you're right as an offerer.
- Badges and ranks: earned automatically. See the badge guide on the Leaderboard page.
- Seasons: pick a month on the Leaderboard to see that month only. The Hall of Fame lists each month's champion.
- Updates: a yellow box appears at the top when someone bets on your offer or a bet of yours is settled, and there's confetti when you win.
Good to know
- It runs on honesty. Claim your name and only settle a bet when you're sure of the outcome.
- Your offers and bets are tied to your device. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, you can't undo or cancel them from there, though your name and stats stay.
- It's all fake. The numbers are just for bragging rights.
